Michael Cowley, MD
A 30-year faculty member, Dr. Cowley has spent nearly his entire medical career with the Medical College of Virginia of Virginia Commonwealth University. A native of Missouri, Dr. Cowley received his undergraduate degree from Tulane University and his medical degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham in 1972. He completed his internal medicine training at the University of California San Diego Affiliated Hospitals and returned to the University of Alabama for a fellowship in cardiovascular disease. In 1977, he joined the MCV Campus faculty as assistant professor of medicine and achieved the rank of full professor in 1986.
Dr. Cowley’s clinical and research expertise includes coronary angioplasty, interventional cardiology and cardiac catheterization. During his career, he has secured grants totaling more than $2.6 million through both federal and private industry funding. Dr. Cowley has authored or co-authored more than 150 research papers, 265 abstracts and 17 book chapters. In addition to participating in numerous editorial manuscript reviews for highly regarded medical journals, Dr. Cowley has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Interventional Cardiology and Inverventional Cardiology.
Dr. Cowley is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Physicians, the American Heart Association’s Council on Clinical Cardiology, and the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Intervention. He currently is chairman of the Interventional Cardiology Committee for the Society for Cardiac Angioplasty and Interventions as well as a member of their Registry and Program Committees. Dr. Cowley’s service to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute spans three decades.
