Antonio Abbate, MD

A native of Fondi, Italy, Dr. Abbate received his degree in medicine from University Campus Bio-Medico of Rome, Italy, graduating magna cum laude. He did his internship in Internal Medicine, Cardiology and General Surgery there and at Policlinico A. Gemelli, and his Cardiology Fellowship at “Scuola di Specializzazione in Cardiologia” Universita’ Cattolica del Sacro Cuore of Rome, Italy. He completed an additional Internal Medicine Internship and Residency program a VCU-MCV Hospitals in 2007 and immediately joined the VCU Pauley Heart Center as Assistant Professor of Medicine.
Dr. Abbate is the recipient of numerous awards and honors in both Italy and the United States, including six Young Investigator Awards for cardiology research. He was inducted into AOA Honor Medical Society in 2005. He is a member of the European Society of Cardiology, the American Heart Association Basic Science Council and the American College of Physicians.
Currently, Dr. Abbate is principal investigator or co-investigator on three clinical studies and a number of basic science projects. Also, he is a founder and investigator for the Center for Overview, Meta-analysis and Evidence-based medicine Training (COMET) http://www.comet.gs/index.html.
Dr. Abbate has authored or co-authored six book chapters and over 100 articles, reviews and editorials that have been published in professionals journals. In addition, he has participated in 116 oral and poster presentations to national and international meetings. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Cardiology and is a peer reviewer for over a dozen national and international journals.
Out of the hospital, he enjoys spending time with his lovely wife, Vera, and newborn baby girl, Gerardina, as well as cooking, reading, and playing tennis.
