A native of Beirut, Lebanon, Dr. Salloum earned his BS in Biology from the American University of Beirut in 1996. After graduation he served his military service as Lieutenant in the Lebanese Army Medical Brigade.

Dr. Salloum immigrated to the United States in 1998 to pursue his PhD in Physiology from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. He completed his postdoctoral training in “Novel Cardioprotective Strategies against Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury” in 2008 under the mentorship of Dr. Rakesh C. Kukreja, director of VCU Pauley Heart Center’s cardiology research labs. He was appointed as Assistant Professor in January of 2009.

Dr. Salloum’s investigative skills were recognized very early in his career with the
American Heart Association Young Investigator Award; the Elizabeth
Fries Young Investigator Award, Clinical Honorable Mention; and the American
Association for the Advancement of Science, Excellence in Science Award.

As a talented and inspiring educator, he has participated in several courses offered to physiology graduate students as well as physiology labs to first year medical students. He has also been involved in the basic research training of at least two dozen undergraduate and graduate students as well as cardiology fellow trainees.

Dr. Salloum’s current research is focused on myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury and heart failure. His major interest is developing novel pharmacologic strategies to combat cardiovascular disease and heart failure. This includes investigations involving phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors and curcumin (the yellow Indian spice known for its anti-inflammatory effects). His research is also directed towards identifying the role of key signaling molecules such as hydrogen sulfide in cardioprotection against ischemia.

Dr. Salloum is also a co-investigator on two clinical research projects involving prevention of post-infarction adverse remodeling in patients as well evaluation of apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in patients with heart failure due to different causes.

Dr. Salloum is a member of the American Heart Association- Council on Basic
Cardiovascular Sciences; the American Physiological Society- Cardiovascular Section;
the International Society for Heart Research; and the American Society of
Echocardiography.

He has authored or co-authored more than 32 articles that have been published in high quality peer-reviewed biomedical journals such as Circulation, Circulation Research, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology, the American Journal of Physiology Heart and Circulatory Physiology, and several others. Additionally, he has authored or co-authored more than 50 abstracts and made numerous presentations at the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology scientific meetings.

Dr. Salloum has served as reviewer for several national and international biomedical journals, which include: Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology, American Journal of Cardiology, American Journal of Physiology, and the Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology.
