VCU Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery
VCU Pauley Heart Center’s Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery encompasses several specialty areas, including heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, aortic surgery, heart and lung transplant, minimally invasive surgery, general thoracic surgery and surgery for congenital heart disease. The specialists in the division routinely work closely with related disciplines, including cancer specialists, cardiologists, pulmonologists and others to provide each patient with the most accurate assessment of his or her condition followed by the most appropriate treatment plan.
The Cardiothoracic Surgery Division has long been on the forefront of the evolution of cardiac surgery. In 1968, our transplant team performed its first heart transplant procedure, distinguishing our program as the second oldest transplant program in the United States. We continue to pioneer improvements in mechanical assist devices and valve surgery and, in early 2006, our cardiac surgery team performed the first artificial heart implant on the East coast.
